OTMA Celebrates 20 Years

Letter from the President

I was shocked this year to realize the Oakland Transportation Management Association is 20 years old. It seems only last week we were a small office on Pitt's campus just beginning to make a difference in Oakland. These days I'm quite proud to look back on OTMA's remarkably successful past and to look forward to an even brighter future.

I'm really proud of OTMA's accomplishments over the years. Our Home Town Streets project greatly improved pedestrian and vehicle safety in the Oakland business district. We were particularly satisfied to compete for and win over $2 million in grant money from PennDOT, as we were the only TMA in the Commonwealth to receive that particular funding that year. And it was equally satisfying to work closely with Pitt and UPMC to get the project completed smoothly. I'm also proud of our work over the years in promoting bicycle ridership and safety for students, residents and employees in the area. OTMA has been promoting cycling since our earliest days, when one of our first efforts was a project to install bike racks and lockers on Pitt's campus.

With each passing year, OTMA is seen more and more as the go-to agency for residents, businesses and institutions in Oakland that want to get things done in transit and related areas. The credit for this must go to our tireless Executive Director Mavis Rainey, whose positive outlook and attitude continue to be the driving force behind OTMA's success.

I also look forward to helping to increase use of ridesharing and alternate transportation, as well as to making Oakland increasingly pedestrian-friendly.

Finally, I'm proud to say OTMA remains financially strong, which bodes well for our ability to overcome whatever challenges and capitalize on whatever opportunities come our way.

As board president, I'd like to thank our numerous partner organizations and other stakeholders without whom we'd be unable to function. Making Oakland an even better place to live, work or learn is a team effort, and we're honored to have so much support from the talented and dedicated friends of OTMA.

Sincerely,
Don Charley, President
