The ongoing shift in mode of transportation to work according to the U.S. Department of Energy

According to the Department of Energy, there has been a shift in means of transportation to work over the last twelve years.

In 2022, for example, 15% of U.S. workers worked from home — up from just 3.3% in 2000 and 4.3% by 2010 before rising sharply due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Driving alone in a car, truck or van remains the dominant mode of transportation to work for all workers 16 years and older, but as a percentage of all modes, driving alone has decreased from 76.6% in 2010 to 68.7% in 2022.

In 2022, the share of workers who carpooled to work was 8.6% followed by 3.1% who took public transit and 2.4% who walked to work.
