Here's the latest update from City of Pittsburgh on the Charles Anderson Bridge which closed to vehicular traffic on February 1, 2023, but currently remains open to bicyclists and pedestrians:
The City of Pittsburgh & PennDOT expect to have a complete design package and to solicit construction bids in January 2024, with a construction contract secured soon thereafter allowing the bridge rehabilitation project to begin, with an expected timeline of three full years to complete.
During the rehabilitation project, the entire concrete deck along with stringers and floor beams supporting the deck will be replaced. This necessary improvement is time-intensive and will keep the bridge closed to all vehicular, bicyclist and pedestrian traffic for the duration of the project — with a tentative re-opening date for all traffic in Fall 2026.
According to the City of Pittsburgh's EngagePGH website on the project, the latest update available was in December 2023. Once bids have been processed and a construction team is under contract, the City of Pittsburgh will schedule a public meeting this Spring 2024 to field questions about the work, schedule, detour routes, and what can be expected during day-to-day construction activities.
Questions, comments, and feedback can be submitted directly to the City via a form on the EngagePGH website — where an ongoing log of other community questions can be reviewed and commented on, as well, in addition to submitting new inquiries, and a Document Library is available containing earlier project updates from April 2023, February 2023, and January 2022.
Current Phase is shown as "Project Bidding and Contracting (Winter 2024)" with the steps: Advertising of Project Plan and Specifications, Contractor bidding, and Writing the construction contract.
Next Phase is shown as "Construction (Spring 2024-2027)" with the steps:
- Remove and replace the bridge deck, stringers, and floorbeams to allow for improved safety and functionality
- Repairs to elements of the bridge truss, including gusset plates and cross-bracing
- Repairs to concrete piers and abutments
- Replacement of the bridge beams and roadway at the Panther Hollow Overpass east of the Charles Anderson
- Tentatively reopen to vehicles in Fall 2026
