With a new year comes new laws to know if you live in Pennsylvania. Many of these new laws are part of the 66 bills signed by Governor Tom Wolf in November 2022 as he prepares to leave office in January 2023.
Here's a look at some of the laws that will go into effect in the new year:
- Decriminalized possession of fentanyl test strips
- Act 112 prevents police from pulling over drivers for having a license plate frame that partially obstructs the plate
- Legalized possession of switchblade knives
- Crackdown on Pennsylvania Turnpike toll absconders allowing the Turnpike Commission to begin notifying registrants that their registrations will be suspended with six week notice if they do not pay tolls worth more than $250
- Regulation and operation of "highly automated vehicles with or without a driver"
- Sex trafficking in Pennsylvania will now be required to register under Megan's Law as registered sex offenders
- Senate Bill 696 expands the definition of personal information to include medical and health information in regard to data breaches
- Junior firefighters who are 17 will now be able to train on live-burn, interior firefighter modules if they have permission from a fire chief and their parent/guardian
